Snakes Aren’t The End!

A some of you may know.. I haven’t been well over the last week or so. Nothing communicable thankfully but it’s been this lingering annoyance that presented itself as a mild cold – for 5 WEEKS. During this time, I’ve felt pretty good. Not 100% but well enough to work, train, play tennis.

It all went to shit this last week.

I had a great Legs session on Monday and was all geared up for my upper body sessions that have been tweaked for the second half of our challenge. On Wednesday morning I started feeling a bit off. By the afternoon I felt a pain in my left side and just felt unwell. I went to the Doctor because the cold HAD been lingering too long but the pain in the side was new, unusual and concerning. I canned my training session and was grateful to Liam for looking after my evening sessions. On Thursday I felt no better and I had been told that my Kidney Function was Low, my Iron levels were borderline anaemic and my inflammation levels were very high. Something was going on.

I asked Nurse Cordelia to go over my scans and she told me to take it easy like her.

Again I don’t train.

Friday morning I have more tests and am told I can’t play Tennis on the weekend. NO TRAINING AGAIN.

By Friday evening my Doctor had dutifully called me to advise that my further results were in and if I started to feel feverish or sick(er) I should head the Emergency Room at the Hospital.

My Saturday night was spent in Emergency getting new tests and also a reminder of how tolerant and hard working the nurses and doctors are who work in the emergency. We also got to hear a drunk woman recite the entire script of Platoon. Well I assume it was Platoon just for the sheer number of F-Bombs and C-Bombs she dropped. She nailed it though.

As it stands now.. I’m a bit better.. though I’m still out of action for a bit until this weird Kidney and Spleen attacking infection decides to pack it in. Thankfully it won’t be long.

Initially I was really annoyed and then a bit anxious about how my being out of action for 2 weeks will affect my results. I love training but the responsible side of me knows that I need to take a break and let my body beat this infection and then get back into it. I feel like I am going backwards.. Like I’ve just hit a snake in Snakes and Ladders. So frustrating.

Sure, I will feel all soft in the muscles and out of routine but that doesn’t mean my eating takes a hit as well. I may not be able to heavy weight lift but there are other things that I can focus on. I can stretch. I can do some rotator cuff work on myself.. I will be converting my allocated training session times into cooking up delicious food ESPECIALLY now that I had a slow cooker at the studio!!!

Bottom line is this – We only spend a small amount of time at the bar (WEIGHT BAR!!) and our health and fitness won’t be completely destroyed by missing a week or two of training if you are sick or injured. Can’t do something? Change your focus to things that you CAN do. A slightly sore knee won’t stop you from doing a bench press. It won’t stop you from doing rehab on it and stretching other parts of your body. It shouldn’t stop you from cooking up a heap of meals for the week.

Don’t drop your bundle! Stop. Assess. Re-focus. Progress.
